Healing from Complex Trauma in Adult Women

If you are you a woman or woman+ who has experienced complex trauma (repetitive and cumulative trauma in the context of relationships where trust and safety is expected) and are ready to move beyond:

  • Vacillating between being activated into fight/flight and being shutdown/numb
  • Challenges in truly connecting with with others
  • Feeling overwhelmed by shame
  • Re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks of the trauma
  • Perhaps feeling defective or unworthy of love on a deep level even if you are proud of external accomplishments

then you’ve come to the right place!

A Normal Response to Trauma

If you are experiencing any of these challenges, know that you aren’t going crazy or a bad person.

In fact, you are having a normal response to traumatic events with the response continuing after the traumatic event(s) have passed.

Survivors of complex trauma often know that underneath it all, parts of them hold the trauma and that those parts are stuck in the past, responding to present moment experiences as though the trauma continues.

Being stuck in this way can feel frustrating, overwhelming, and lonely.

AND, there is a way to heal and live an empowered life after trauma.

I can help.

CHOICES ALONG YOUR JOURNEY

Options you might explore over time — always guided by safety, readiness, and your goals.

Somatic Therapy
(Body-Based Support)

As part of our one-on-one sessions, or as a stand alone, you may choose to practice Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), an evidence-based protocol for complex trauma and PTSD.

Additionally, you will have the option to work on nervous system regulation using body-based strategies to help you get out of the cycle of fight/flight and shutdown and to a more balanced state.

How Somatic Therapy Can Help

Trauma often stays stored in the body. Somatic therapy, including Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), helps increase awareness, choice, and a sense of safety — supporting your nervous system in moving out of survival and toward balance.

Learn more about Somatic Therapy here.

Internal Family Systems
(IFS)

In our one-on-one sessions, with compassion and curiosity, you are gently welcomed to share, process, and heal.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a trauma-informed, somatic approach that helps you understand and heal the parts of you that learned to adapt in order to survive. Rather than trying to get rid of symptoms or reactions, we work to understand why they developed and what they need.

How IFS Can Help

This approach is especially helpful for healing trauma, reducing shame, and softening inner conflict — allowing more choice, self-trust, and emotional balance over time.

Learn more about Internal Family Systems (IFS) here.

EMDR Therapy
(Trauma Reprocessing)

In our one-on-one sessions, we will start with inner and outer resourcing to prepare for the work of EMDR trauma reprocessing.

As you feel ready, you are welcome to reprocess traumatic memories using EMDR.

How EMDR Can Help

EMDR is particularly helpful for single-incident trauma, when you have specific trauma memories you would like to release.

“Jen is one of the most compassionate and empathic people I have ever met. She is a skilled listener, and her responses are intelligent, intuitive, and affirming. I have learned so much about myself and the world around me because of her willingness to be real and share from her own life experiences. Jen has created for me, a safe place within which I have been able to heal and learn how to trust again.”

LIVE AN EMPOWERED LIFE AFTER TRAUMA

Welcome!  My name is Jen Barnes.  My therapy practice specializes in counseling women+ of all ages who have experienced complex trauma – repetitive and cumulative trauma often over prolonged period of time and in the context of certain relationships where trust and safety is expected. The trauma you may have experienced could include sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal/emotional abuse, emotional neglect, neglect, domestic violence, and/or some other type of trauma.

Having experienced complex trauma:

🫧  You may notice challenges in regulating your emotions, perhaps shifting from feeling shutdown, numb, or disconnected into activation of the fight or flight response which may look like anxiety, panic attacks, anger, irritability, and/or avoidance.

🫧  You may experience intrusive thoughts or other kinds of re-experiencing of the trauma like nightmares or flashbacks.

🫧  You may notice challenges in truly connecting with others despite having people in your life who try to connect in a way that feels emotionally safe, or at least safe enough.

🫧  You may feel disconnected from your body and have difficulty really being present in the moment.

🫧  You may feel overwhelmed by shame.

🫧  Underneath it all, you may feel defective or unworthy of love on a deep level even if you are proud of external accomplishments.

You aren’t going crazy or a bad person. You are having a normal response to traumatic events with the response continuing after the traumatic event(s) have passed.

Survivors of complex trauma often know that underneath it all, parts of them hold the trauma and that those parts are stuck in the past, responding to present moment experiences as though the trauma continues.

Being stuck in this way can feel frustrating, overwhelming, and lonely.

There is a way to heal and live an empowered life after trauma.

I will accompany and companion you in your journey, sharing both skills to regulate your nervous system and deal with present challenges and helping you heal the trauma that has been keeping you stuck using a variety of evidence-based trauma-focused protocols.

You don’t need to walk this journey alone. I am here to help.

ALL ARE WELCOME HERE

I value and serve women+ of all ages and sizes, races, cultures, and ethnicities, faiths and beliefs (including none), gender identity, sexual orientations, abilities, neuro-diversities, and socio-economic statuses.
